The bachelor´s thesis in theoretical part deals with the disposal of sludge with respect to legislation, method of sludge treatment and drying technologies. This part is also dedicated to traffic connected with sludge. The practical part includes the calculation of combustion heat and calorific value. This section is also deals with summarization production of sludge and sludge treatment, analysis of these data. This part also includes an overview of the mass flow of sludge across the Czech Republic at locations with extended powers.

This bachelor thesis deals with sludge management of water treatment plants. The aim of the thesis is to analyse posibilities of sludge treatment and describe sludge management in specific cases. This writing is divided into theoretical and practical part. Theoretical part deals with principles of water treatment, creation of sludge in water treatment plants with different number of separation stages, quality of sludge, sludge treatment, elimination or using of sludge. Practical part describes sludge management of six specific water treatment plants in the Czech Republic.

Energy utilization of sewage sludge

This bachelor’s work discusses the origin and composition of the sludge. The composition of sludge is given by legislation, as well as its treatment and processing. Sludge shall be adjusted in order to be used on agricultural land, landfilled, incinerated, etc. The sludge processes are described further in this work. Sludge disposal options are varied, but not everywhere equally represented. This is represented in chapter where treatment of sludge in Czech Republic and abroad are compared, illustrated in chats. The most extensive and most common method of disposal of sludge is application on the ground and burning. Usable energy is obtained by burning the sludge.

Technical economical valuation of WWTP´s sludge treatment

This diploma thesis is focused on sludge management of wastewater treatment plant. The research work contains an overview of the related legislation, outlines the problems of sludge treatment in the Czech Republic and also deals with technologies and technical solutions that are related to the processing and treatment of sewage sludge for various size categories of wastewater treatment plants. The second part is devoted to the technical and economic assessment of wastewater treatment plants in the category from 500 EO to 2 000 EO. The assessment is based on real data provided by WWTP operators and focuses on electricity consumption, investment costs and operating costs. Part of the diploma thesis is also determining the rentability of drainage equipment, and studying the convenience of using mobile or stationary drainage equipment.

The theoretical part is focused on the basic properties of sludge, its composition and getting acquainted with technological solutions leading to its treatment and disposal today. The practical part introduces the specific water treatment in the Czech Republic, and how specifically these treatment plants deal with the issue. Based on the practical part, it is possible to present more about how are these problematics in fact mostly solved.

The main emphasis is on incineration, which are governed by legislation. First are listed sludge treatment and utilization technology which included thermal processing in which is thoroughly described the process of incineration. The following are methods for co-incineration of sludge and devices for direct incineration. Work is finished by chapter about flue gas cleaning.

Hygienization of dewatered sewage sludge using vermicomposting process under field conditions

Sewage sludge is a waste material that is a valuable source of organic matter and nutrients and is used as a fertiliser on agricultural land in many countries around the world. However, the application of sewage sludge carries risks associated with the presence of pathogenic micro- organisms and other undesirable substances in this material and in many countries sewage sludge must meet limits for land application. Vermicomposting of these materials can be one effective way of reducing pathogens in sewage sludge. In this thesis, I investigated the effectiveness of sanitizing sewage sludge in the vermicomposting process under field conditions. The experiment was conducted in an earthen vermicomposter with a total working volume of 10.5 m3 near the village of Hrbov, near Lhenice in the South Bohemia region. Hygienization efficiency was measured using a test with an introduced microorganism (E. coli). The test was modified for the vermicomposting process. In the experiment, a mixture of sewage sludge mixed with birch chips in a ratio of 1:1.5 (sludge: chips) was (i) vermicomposted for six months, (ii) composted only, and (iii) composted for one month and then vermicomposted.
